This week we are diving into Nehemiah 4, focusing on the reality of criticism and opposition that we can often face in our daily lives.

Nehemiah was a great leader, but no matter how great of a leader you are, you are bound to face opposition and criticism at some point. Inevitably, people will dislike a decision you make or question your leadership capabilities. Nehemiah faced great opposition from people who were not native to Jerusalem. Yet, Nehemiah leads the way in what it means to be a leader who handles opposition and perseveres.

  1. Would people describe you as a more critical person or an encouraging person?
  2. How do you ensure constructive criticism doesn’t become destructive criticism?
  3. Read Nehemiah 4:1 – 9.
  4. How do you tend to handle critical people?
  5. Read Nehemiah 4:15 – 20.
  6. How can you continue to persevere in the face of opposition/criticism? (Ex: Following Jesus, your daily job, a good work you are doing, or the church.)
  7. How do you guard against letting the negativity of others affect how you do the good work?
